The first weekend alone delivers two films that couldn't sit further apart in mood yet share a willingness to lean into genre as their primary storytelling register. It's the kind of opening week that reminds subscribers why Indian OTT, at its best, treats the platform not as a dumping ground but as a curated stage.
A Tale of Two Openers: DC and Unmadham
Both September 4 premieres arrive with meaningful directorial and writing pedigree. DC, streaming on Sun NXT in Tamil with Telugu and Malayalam feeds, is helmed by Arun Matheswaran, a filmmaker whose projects consistently earn attention for how they position their characters inside genre frameworks. Lokesh Kanagaraj steps into the lead as Devadas, opposite Wamiqa Gabbi as Chandra, with Sanjana Krishnamoorthy rounding out the principal cast and Anirudh Ravichander composing the score. Prince of Mollywood and What's Still to Come
JioHotstar gets its marquee original series with Prince of Mollywood on September 11, a Malayalam-language project in which Shani Khader serves simultaneously as writer, director and creator — the kind of singular creative control that often yields the most distinctive visual grammar in a series. Dain Davis leads a cast that includes Shani Khader on screen alongside Nirmal Palazhi, Harishma, Vidya Vijaykumar, Fukru and Aswin Vijayan, with Pixel Playground producing. Beyond the confirmed slate, JioHotstar has secured streaming rights to two Malayalam features still awaiting premiere dates. Thudakkam, directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, pairs Vismaya Mohanlal with Ashish Joe Antony, Bobby Kurian, Sai Kumar, Manoj K. Jayan, K. B. Ganesh Kumar, Miya George, Chippy Renjith, Kottayam Ramesh and Jaffar Idukki. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit brings Nivin Pauly as Justin opposite Mamitha Baiju as Ashley, supported by an ensemble that includes Sangeeth Prathap, Vinay Forrt, Shyam Mohan, Srinda, Suresh Krishna, Bindu Panikkar, Abhiram Radhakrishnan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Roshan Shanavas, Shameer Khan, Parvathy Ayyapadas and Vineeth Vishwam. Both titles will slide into the confirmed September column once their dates are officially revealed.
